Belinda has accomplished a lot in seven years
Belinda Constant gave herself a To-Do list when she ran for City Council in 2005. Since then, she has completed all of those tasks within her power, and many more.
Working with the Mayor, local businesses, residents and volunteers, and combined with her own smart business sense and energy, she has changed the face of Gretna. Now, Gretna is a place to go on weekends.
More recreation, better streets, open restaurants and cultural opportunities mean more fun, more jobs, more money spent in our city.
Great ideas require a business approach to pay for them. With her administrative background and ability to not only plan, but fund and execute large projects, Belinda Constant has proven she has the skills to be Mayor.
The Farmers’ Market and Gretna Art Walk offer weekend entertainment and shopping for everything from turnip greens to fine art. Councilwoman Constant’s district includes the Gretna Historic District and Riverfront. Many of her projects have involved the adaptive use of historic structures, balancing preservation and economic development. The 100-year old Gretna City Council Chamber is “A total restoration of something you cannot rebuild today.” It is listed with the movie industry’s list of shooting locations, which generates money for the city.
The old Post Office, purchased by the City, will be converted to a Cultural Center to be used for small concerts, plays and private parties such as school graduations. Councilwoman Constant secured funds for the project, which soon goes out to bid.
An historic home moved to a central green space will house the Heritage House Information Center. Watch progress this year as the University of Washington designs and plants gardens on the grounds. Councilwoman Constant worked with Mayor Harris to complete his 20-year effort to improve the “washboard” condition of Madison Street. Belinda Constant is committed to improve streets throughout the city.
Not forgetting the Gretna pets, Belinda started the original Westbank Mardi Gras pet parade to help support PAWS.
Belinda Constant has served on the City Council since 2005, working diligently to revitalize Gretna’s downtown area and promoting it, not only as the “business/governmental hub” of the Westbank, but also as a tourism and entertainment destination for the metro area.
